Revision Rhinoplasty
These are the operations performed in case that the desired results cannot be obtained for a variety of reasons from the nose aesthetic surgeries performed previously. Excessive removal of the nasal cartilage structure during the first operation, falling of the nasal tip, nasal collapse, inability to correct the curvature of the nose, excessive raised nose, asymmetry of the nose are the most common causes of nose revision operations.
Nose revision operations can last for 1.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the result of the first surgery. Although local anesthesia is applied for small interventions, it is usually performed under general anesthesia. Either open or closed rhinoplasty may be preferred in revision nasal surgery.
There are two types of revision rhinoplasty surgeries.
- Minor surgeries that take 15-20 minutes to solve problems with small interventions.
- Major surgeries in which the nose can be reshaped by cartilage taken from the ear or ribs, which may last for 5-6 hours.
Before the Procedure
Firstly, it is necessary to understand what is performed in the nose aesthetic surgery and what the person actually wants. Post-operative deformation of the nose should be determined and the cases where the person is not satisfied should be examined in detail. Breathing status should be checked with the necessary endoscopic devices and intranasal details should be examined. If there is a problem with breathing, the cause should be examined in detail so that it can be corrected during the operation. After a detailed interview, the patient and the doctor should make a joint decision and plan for the nose revision surgery.
- Aspirin and similar blood thinners should be discontinued 1 week before the surgery.
- Smoking and alcohol use should be discontinued for a while both before and after surgery.
- Consumption of food or drinks should be discontinued at least 6 hours before the surgery.
- Comfortable clothes should be preferred on the day of surgery and make-up should not be done.
- A more comfortable process can be provided by oral medication on the day of the surgery, in line with the request of the person.
Recovery Process After the Operation
- According to the operation performed in the nose, the patient can be kept under control in the hospital for a few days.
- After the operation, bruising and swelling can be minimized by applying ice to the area.
- The patient is relieved by applying ice and painkillers on the first postoperative day.
- The head should be kept high in the lying position during the first week after the operation. This will help bring the swelling down.
- If a perforated silicone splint is used, they are removed 4 days after the operation. Shower can be taken without wetting the plastic splint on the nose.
- The first 2-3 days after the operation may be the period when the bruises and swelling are most intense. This should not scare you. The bruising and swelling, which is a natural result of the operation, will decrease with each passing day.
- Bandages on the nose are removed approximately 1 week after the operation. The bands that are compatible with the skin color are used for another week to ensure almost all of the edema is eliminated.
- Return to normal life can be achieved after an average of 10 days after the operation. (The length of this period may vary from person to person.)
- One can use sunglasses 3 months after the operation. The use of light-rimmed glasses can be used after 1 month.
- After two weeks slow-paced walks are allowed. Approximately 8 weeks after the operation, swimming can be allowed as well. (This period may vary from person to person and should be performed with the advice of a doctor.)
- The nose takes its new form in a period from 6 months to 1 year.
